Custom proficiency testing

Our standing programs cover 15 artifacts in 8 disciplines. If the instrument, range or discipline your lab needs to demonstrate isn't one of them, you can request a custom PT. Tell us the equipment type, range and resolution you need to demonstrate, and we will tell you whether we can build or source a suitable artifact.

What to include

The instrument or measurement type, for example a vacuum gauge, a tachometer or a humidity sensor.
The range and resolution you calibrate on customer work.
How many technicians or measurement systems should take part.
Your preferred test date.
Whether your accreditation body needs PT from an ISO/IEC 17043 accredited provider for this area.

How a request is handled

Choose Other / Custom on the PT request form and describe the instrument or test. Submitting requests a quote and scheduling review.

Custom PT and our accredited scope

Lake Balance is accredited by PJLA to ISO/IEC 17043:2023 as a proficiency testing provider (certificate L24-898). The scope supplement lists these schemes:

Mass and mass related: Weights; calibration of scales and balances; calibration of mass
Volume: Pipettes
Physical dimensional: Micrometers, calipers, test indicators
Thermodynamic: Thermometers; temperature and humidity sensors
Rotation speed: Tachometers
Electrical: Multimeters
Pressure / vacuum: Pressure and vacuum gauges
Mass flow: Flow meters

Some of these, such as tachometers, test indicators and humidity sensors, have no standing program. Each scheme carries flex codes F2 and F3, which the scope defines as the ability to introduce a new product of similar composition to an artifact used for an accredited scheme (F2) and a new range for an accredited scheme (F3). Whether a particular custom PT falls within the accredited scope is confirmed when we review the request.

Custom PT questions

What does a custom PT cost?

Custom programs are quoted on request. We review what you need, confirm whether we can provide a suitable artifact, and send the price with that answer.

Will a custom PT be within your ISO/IEC 17043 accreditation?

It depends on the measurement. Our PJLA L24-898 scope supplement lists eight schemes, each with flex codes that allow a new artifact of similar composition or a new range within that scheme. We confirm whether a particular request falls within the accredited scope when we review it.

What if you can't provide the PT we need?

We will tell you. Not every measurement can be turned into a PT artifact that we can characterize and ship.
