Temperature probe proficiency testing

A temperature PT for labs that calibrate thermometers and probes by comparison. We send a characterized Fisher Scientific temperature probe. Your technician compares it in your temperature well against your reference probe at four set points, using your normal procedure, and reports each reading with its expanded uncertainty. We score every point with an En number against our reference value.

Temperature Probe proficiency test kit

Temperature Probe proficiency test

Temperature probe / thermometer proficiency test.

Kit
Fisher Scientific temperature probe (15-081-102)
Test points
0 °C, 25 °C, 50 °C, 100 °C
You'll need
A temperature well that can generate from 0°C to 100°C and a temperature probe that has a readability of 0.001°C
Price

Sample instructions
  1. Calibrate the thermometer with your temperature well and fill out a calibration report like you would for a customer. Use Lake Balance Calibration Solutions as the customer.
  2. Then open the test temperature probe box marked TEMP-119.
  3. Set the temperature well to 0°C, allow it to stabilize at that temperature, and record reading and uncertainty on the Data Reporting Sheet.
  4. Set the temperature well to 25°C, allow it to stabilize at that temperature, and record reading and uncertainty on the Data Reporting Sheet.
  5. Set the temperature well to 50°C, allow it to stabilize at that temperature, and record reading and uncertainty on the Data Reporting Sheet.
  6. Set the temperature well to 100°C, allow it to stabilize at that temperature, and record reading and uncertainty on the Data Reporting Sheet.
  7. Email results and your uncertainty budget to proficiency@lakebalance.com
  8. After you've received confirmation the PT set is good to return, return to Lake Balance Calibration Solutions.

Kit barcodes in these sample instructions are examples; the kit you receive may differ.

What the temperature PT tests

Comparison calibration depends on more than the reference probe. Well uniformity and stability, immersion depth, settling time and how you read the reference all end up in the result. The four set points, 0 °C, 25 °C, 50 °C and 100 °C, cover the range most laboratory thermometers and probes are used in.

Before the PT readings you calibrate the thermometer with your temperature well and complete a calibration report as you would for a customer, using Lake Balance Calibration Solutions as the customer.

Getting a satisfactory result

  • Let the probe acclimate for 24 hours before testing.
  • Allow the well to stabilize fully at each set point before recording.
  • Use the same immersion depth for the PT probe and your reference.
  • Report expanded uncertainty at the coverage factor you use on customer certificates.

How it's scored

Each reported value is compared with the Lake Balance reference value using the En number, which accounts for both your expanded uncertainty and ours. An |En| below 1 is satisfactory. Your report is released in the customer portal.

Accreditation

Lake Balance is accredited by PJLA to ISO/IEC 17043:2023 as a proficiency testing provider (certificate L24-898). The scope supplement lists the Thermodynamic scheme: thermometers; temperature and humidity sensors.

Temperature PT questions

What equipment do we need for the temperature PT?

A temperature well that can generate 0 °C to 100 °C and a reference temperature probe with a readability of 0.001 °C.

Which temperatures are tested?

0 °C, 25 °C, 50 °C and 100 °C. You report the reading and your expanded uncertainty at each set point.

Is temperature PT within your ISO/IEC 17043 accreditation?

Yes. The PJLA L24-898 scope supplement lists a Thermodynamic scheme covering thermometers and temperature and humidity sensors. The certificate and scope are on our accreditation page.
