Pressure gauge proficiency testing

A gauge proficiency test for labs that calibrate high-pressure gauges. We send a characterized Crystal XP2i 10,000 psig digital gauge. Your technician calibrates it against your pressure standard with your normal procedure and reports the reading and expanded uncertainty at ten points. We score each point with an En number against our reference value.

What the pressure gauge PT tests

The PT shows whether your pressure standard, procedure and uncertainty budget hold up across the full range of a 10,000 psi gauge. The ten points run from 1,000 psi to 10,000 psi in 1,000 psi steps, so a problem that only appears at the low or high end of your standard shows up as a specific test point rather than a general failure.

Before recording, you exercise the gauge three times to full scale, as you would for a customer gauge. After that, the comparison comes down to your generated pressure, your corrections and your claimed uncertainty.

Getting a satisfactory result

  • Use the pressure standard and procedure you use for customer gauges in this range.
  • Include head height, standard resolution and repeatability in your uncertainty budget if your procedure calls for them.
  • Report expanded uncertainty at the coverage factor you use on customer certificates.

How it's scored

Each reported value is compared with the Lake Balance reference value using the En number, which accounts for both your expanded uncertainty and ours. An |En| below 1 is satisfactory. Your report is released in the customer portal.

Accreditation

Lake Balance is accredited by PJLA to ISO/IEC 17043:2023 as a proficiency testing provider (certificate L24-898). The scope supplement lists the Pressure / vacuum scheme: pressure and vacuum gauges.

Pressure gauge PT questions

What equipment do we need for the pressure gauge PT?

A pressure standard that can generate 10,000 psi or more, with a readability of 1 psi or better.

Which pressures are tested?

Ten points: 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000, 6,000, 7,000, 8,000, 9,000 and 10,000 psi. You report the gauge reading and your expanded uncertainty at each point.

Is pressure gauge PT within your ISO/IEC 17043 accreditation?

Yes. The PJLA L24-898 scope supplement lists a Pressure / Vacuum scheme for the calibration of pressure and vacuum gauges. The certificate and scope are on our accreditation page.

We calibrate lower-range or vacuum gauges. Is there a PT for that?

The standing program is the 10,000 psi gauge. For a different range or a vacuum gauge, submit a custom PT request with the instrument and range, and we will tell you whether we can provide a suitable artifact.
